In this course we will cover several major topics. First, we’ll look at Windows Store app development, how to get started and how the underlying architecture works. We will then discuss the concepts behind Windows 8 user interface design. We will review the four versions of Windows that are available and some of the key differences between them. Then we will take a look at the project templates that Visual Studio provides, which are: the blank, grid, split, hub and navigation templates.

In this course we will take a look at how to implement navigation within an application, how to implement event handling and how to do object oriented programming in JavaScript using support provided by WinJS. The object oriented techniques that we will look support inheritance, namespaces, and asynchronous programming.

We will look at application states and app lifecycle notification events in this course. Next, let's go over the distinction between launching and activating an app. As part of application Process Lifetime Management, we will explore the options available for storing application state, which are: Local, Temporary, and Roaming Folders and Settings. Finally, you will see how to implement an extended splash screen.

In this course we will review a few of the many HTML5 elements that are available to us when we develop Windows 8 apps. We will also explore the WinJS controls that build on top of the elementary HTML5 markup traditionally used in web development. These WinJS controls are more powerful and flexible. Some of the WinJS controls we will explore include: AppBar, FlipView, Flyout, Repeater, SearchBox, TimePicker, and Tooltip. Finally we will look at the new WinJS 2.0 controls.

This course will start out reviewing traditional CSS3 Layout, including flexbox, regions, and multicolumn layout. Then we will discuss WinJS controls that support additional UI layout options, including the ListView, SemanticZoom, and ViewBox controls. We will see that the ListView displays items in grid or list layout, whereas the SemanticZoom supports zoom between two semantic levels, and the ViewBox allows for dynamically scaling single child element to fill available space without changing aspect ratio.

In this course, we will see how to work with Application Tiles, Toasts, and Badge Notifications. We will see that there are four Notification Delivery Methods that you can use. We will also see how Background Tasks can be used to continue running code on behalf of the application while it is suspended or terminated. Finally, we will explore how to implement apps that are capable of displaying Lock Screen Notifications.
